In 1961 the canal breached close to the junction with the Trent & Mersey Canal. NCB boat Elizabeth was lost in the breach and subsequently buried when the hole was filled in. There are photos of the boat and the breach in our image gallery here.

The hand-drawn plan below shows part of a ground survey of the area done in 1999. It would appear that the boat is still in it's original position, though we have heard stories that that the cabin of the boat was taken away shortly before it was buried.
